The Benefits of Locuming for Early Career Pharmacists

You have finished your internship, now what? Many newly registered Pharmacists ask us this question as they are not sure what they want to do after their internship. One of the things we suggest is to locum if you can get the chance to. So, if you have always wanted to explore Australia, this is a great way to do it. It gives you a chance to experience living in a different place as a local and making new friends. Who knows, you might even fall in love with the community and want to settle down there. It is also a good way to test out a certain pharmacy if you have thought about taking on a permanent role there.

Being a Locum Pharmacist is also beneficial to opening doors towards your future career. It is a great platform for building long lasting relationships with some big pharmacy groups and owners. It gives you the opportunity to experience variety, from working in small rural pharmacies to a super busy pharmacy whether it be in a community, aged care or hospital setting. This helps expose you to a diverse range of environments, procedures and patients (for example: indigenous communities in rural NT) of each pharmacy further adding to your skill set.

One of the best things about locuming is the flexibility it offers. You can pick where and when you want to locum, allowing you the freedom to go away on that ski trip to Japan or do some further studying. Also coming straight out of your internship, it is a great way to earn money as locum work usually offer higher rates, something a permanent role might not offer you as a newly registered Pharmacist.

Hopefully experiencing all these different options makes it an easier choice for you and where you want to be.
