In a bid to meet the ever-growing healthcare demands of South-East Queensland, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Branch President, Chris Owen, is urging residents of Brisbane and the Gold Coast to seize the opportunity to acquire skills in community pharmacy. The call comes as pharmacies expand their roles, becoming integral primary health care providers in the region.

Expanding Roles in Community Pharmacy

Pharmacies have always played a crucial role in keeping communities healthy. However, in recent years, this role has significantly expanded, with community pharmacies evolving into essential primary healthcare providers. Chris Owen emphasises the importance of this evolution, highlighting the critical role pharmacies play in the health and well-being of South-East Queenslanders.

The Path to Becoming a Qualified Pharmacy Assistant

Residents in and around Brisbane and the Gold Coast now have a unique opportunity to become qualified pharmacy assistants. The Queensland Government's Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative offers fully-funded training courses to eligible candidates. These courses pave the way for individuals to work in Queensland's extensive network of over 1,200 community pharmacies.

According to Mr. Owen, the fully-funded program is an excellent gateway to entering the respected pharmacy profession. Once employed as a pharmacy assistant, there are opportunities for specialisation in areas of personal interest, enabling career growth through additional training provided by The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Branch.

Fundamentals of Community Pharmacy Course

The Fundamentals of Community Pharmacy course is fully subsidised for eligible participants under the Queensland Government's Skilling Queenslanders for Work program. Following the success of 11 courses in 2022, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Branch, continues to deliver these valuable courses throughout 2023.

The in-person courses run for seven weeks, including 10 days of vocational placement in a community pharmacy. This hands-on experience allows participants to apply their knowledge and gain practical skills. Successful graduates of the course will receive a nationally accredited SIR20116 Certificate II in Community Pharmacy, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the diverse needs of community pharmacy patients.

Act Now: Limited Spaces Available

With limited spaces available, individuals interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy within the Brisbane and Gold Coast regions are encouraged to complete their expression of interest before Friday, May 5th. Both courses are set to commence on Monday, May 8th.
